This week I’ve had some really interesting chats at work about food choices. So much so that one of my colleagues commented, ‘if I want to take a break from work I just need to ask you a question about veganism or food choices.’
And he was right. I talked for at least 15 minutes about all of the things that really get to me and the way that we are lied to and mis-communicated by food corporations regarding what we eat, why we eat it and how we ‘need’ it to be healthy.
Here are some examples:
1) Consumption of dairy milk is marketed to us as the best course of calcium and also the way to ‘strong’ bones. However, numerous studies have now not only shown that the countries in the world who consume the most cows milk ALSO have the highest rates of osteoporosis but that consuming cows milk actually LEACHES calcium from your bones. Therefore, the MORE milk you consume the MORE LIKELY you are to suffer from it. Read the truth here.
2) Orange juice…mainly processed orange juice..is the best source of vitamin C. Massive massive marketing ploy e.g. consume this really sugary drink that just happens to have some oranges it and and its really good for you. Instead of the truth which is that this really sugary shit (sorry) is part of a massive problem in terms of our overall global sugar consumption. What foods are the highest in vitamin C? Oranges (in their natural form) are up there but so are: bell peppers, dark leafy greens, kiwis, broccoli, berries, citrus fruits, tomatoes, peas, and papayas. Its just they don’t have the weight of a marketing campaign behind them.
3) The food triangle. The one we are taught at school to model our dietary choices around…you know the one. Who invented it? Who crafted it to help us make healthy choices? A highly qualified independent scientifically approved body right? WRONG. The office of the secretary of agriculture in the USA who borrowed the idea from a swedish model and then completely MANIPULATED it to get the support of all the major players in the food industry. NOT INDEPENDENT, NOT MOTIVATED to look out for our health and NOT BASED in scientific fact.
4) Low fat / diet food that people THINK is healthy. It has less fat which will help me lead a healthier life…right? WRONG. Its probably pumped with sugar / carbs (just check the label and you’ll immediately see it) to ensure it still tastes good and whats more – it now even less resembles the product it once was at its source. Why do we think its healthy? Because its marketed to us. It feeds into our psyche. Its normalised in every day living and in marketing campaigns and in society. Fat isn’t bad for you. You actually need it. Just in moderation and in the form it was created in nature.
You really really are what you eat.
Let me say that again.
You are what you eat.
Your grandma was right. And – it all makes sense.
All of this stuff we are eating is killing us. And its killing the environment and its killing the healthcare system.
There is an alternative and thats not buying into this crazy marketing rubbish spun by large food corporations who are motivated financially to get us to eat their food and who fight for a % of your stomach space.
I just finished reading two amazing books; The China Study and Make Peace with your Plate and both of them exhort the values of a plant based diet. They have empirically shown that a plant based diet helps to prevent heart disease and cancer and, just maybe, a whole lot of other diseases. They make the link between what we eat and the diseases we suffer from.
The truth is out there and the China study may not have all the answers and should certainly be questioned, just like all these points above should be, but what I have learned in these last 4 months since becoming vegan is ASSUME nothing and question everything you put into your mouth. If nothing else, this blog is about asking questions, doing your own research and not accepting the truth at face value.
Even eating meat is about accepting the face value of the marketing campaigns that indicate a happy healthy lifestyle for their livestock outside in the fresh air living wholesome lives where they get to exhibit all their natural behaviours? Does anyone really truly believe thats the case or do they disassociate with it because that disassociation enables them to continue to eat what they want without being part of the consequence of that choice? Another marketing powerhouse strategy that has pervaded for years and years and continues to. Cows aren’t happy to have their calves taken away from them when they are born so that we can drink their milk instead…and so it goes on. Good clever marketing.
Its your health, your life and your choice.
The truth is out there. You just have to look for it. And sometimes you have to really dig for it. Because there are some companies who really don’t want you to know about it.
